LONDON GRILLING: Diana Barranco, Community Director, Elephant & Castle, Talks To Delancey Real Estate.

Hi Diana, please can you tell us about Elefit. How did it come about?

In 2019, the first Elefit event in Castle Square was an incredible success, bringing people together through fitness activities and encouraging a sense of wellness. The great impression left by this event has motivated us to bring it back in order to celebrate local talent and emphasize the variety of our community. With activities ranging from Afrobeat, Latin Dance Aerobics to Yoga by Ministry of Sound, Elefit has something for everyone, providing a captivating and inclusive atmosphere.

You are community director of Elephant & Castle town centre. Can you tell us a bit about your job and what makes it so different?

As the Community Director of Elephant & Castle Town Centre, I oversee and coordinate various community initiatives and projects. My job is unique in that it seeks to empower the local community to take the lead in creating their own experiences. To do this, I work closely with residents, businesses, and local organisations to ensure that their voices are heard and that our initiatives are in line with their needs and desires. This collaborative approach encourages a strong sense of ownership and pride within the community.

Why is Elephant & Castle such a passion / exciting place for you to work in and help support?

I have a great fondness for Elephant & Castle due to its lively and dynamic energy. Working here has enabled me to see first-hand the remarkable transformation that can be achieved through collective involvement and the positive outcomes it can bring to people. I am inspired by the way different communities come together, respecting their individual differences and building powerful relationships.

What can Londoners and visitors to the area expect to see happening in Elephant & Castle in the future?

The Elephant & Castle area is set to continue its progression as a vibrant hub of cultural exchange and innovation. Community-led initiatives will continue to promote cultural diversity and creative expression through engaging events, performances, and workshops. Sustainable development will be prioritised, aiming to create spaces that foster community interaction and well-being.

What is the best bit about your job?

Witnessing the positive change our initiatives bring to individuals and the entire community is my favourite part of my job. It's amazing to see people from diverse backgrounds come together, recognize one another's talents and stories, and form strong relationships. This reinforces the importance of community and reinforces my commitment to helping and empowering local residents and businesses.

What else do you do to support the local community, residents and businesses?

Apart from organising community events in Castle Square and activities for the hybrid community hub, I am actively involved in managing the Inspiring Elephant Community Fund application process, making sure it supports the current needs of the area. I am also part of the board members of the Elephant and Castle Business Forum, assisting local businesses in creating their own collective voice to develop initiatives that can solve the most relevant matters and attract funding.

Where are your favourite places in London to eat and relax?

London offers a plenty of selection of culinary delights and relaxing spaces, including Elephant and Castle, but apart from this, my favourite places are Borough Market for their incredible selection of fresh produce and Richmond Riverside for the variety of restaurants and scenic views.

Anything else you want to tell us?

Join us on the 15th of July in Castle Square for a day full of fun and wellness activities!
